Between 1957 and 1967, the Congress MP from this seat associated with the Mahatma was industrialist Kamalnayan Bajaj, Rahul's father. In 1980, the seat elected as its MP Vasant Sathe, who repeated the performance in 1984 as well. In 1991, the constituency plumbed for the CPI-M's G R Marotrao; nothing surprising about it, since in previous elections the CPI-M was runner-up behind the Congress. It went the other extreme in 1996, electing the BJP's Vijay Anna Mude who defeated Sathe by 22,000 votes. The sitting CPI-M MP secured 15.98 % of the vote.
