The constituency began by voting the Jana Sangh in its first election in 1957, before going the Congress way. It also voted the Janata twice, in 1977 and 1980. Husain Dalwai was elected from here in 1984 on the Congress ticket, and in 1989 and 1991 the constituency returned to the Congress fold.
