Till 1989 the constituency was firmly with the Congress, Janardhan Poojary winning the seat from 1977, despite the Janata wave, till 1989. He was sent packing in 1991 by the BJP's V K Dhananjaya, who repeated the performance in 1996 by a margin of around 14,000 votes.
