In 1989 this constituency elected the man who would go on to become deputy prime minister in the V P Singh Cabinet and wreck the Janata Dal from within, Devi Lal. The electorate's disenchantment with him was seen in 1991, when he was defeated by the Congress candidate. Things became worse for him in 1996, which he fought on the Samata Party ticket, when he lost to sitting Congress MP Bhupinder Singh by a margin of around 2,700 votes.
