Barring once in 1962, when it voted the Swatantra Party, the constituency has remained loyal to the Congress. S P Damor first contested the election on its ticket in 1971, but was routed by the Congress-Organisation candidate, but came back in 1977 and has retained the seat a record six times so far. In 1996, he actually increased his vote tally against the BJP candidate.
