Till 1984 this constituency had voted strictly for the Congress, which won 53.1 % of the vote the last time it contested from here. In 1989, the Janata Dal managed to break this hegemony, but in 1991 and in 1996 the BJP was the favourite, its percentage of votes going from 60 % to 62 % in the same period.
