The Jan Sangh won this seat once before, and the Lok Dal was voted in 1977, but otherwise this seat has remained with the Congress, till 1989. That year, the BJP's Kalka Das was elected for the first time, and in 1991 he was re-elected. In 1996 the Congress fielded Jagjivan Ram's daughter, Meira Kumar, who defeated the sitting MP by 42,000 votes.
