Kanwar Lal Gupta was the first non-Congress MP from here, when he won the seat for the Jan Sangh in 1967. He was returned to the Lok Sabha in 1977, but this time as the Lok Dal candidate. In 1980 Jagdish Tytler took back the seat for the Congress, and retained the seat in 1984. In 1989 the BJP's V K Malhotra defeated Tytler, who did likewise to Malhotra in 1991. In 1996, the BJP fielded Vijay Kumar Goel, who defeated Tytler by just 2,000 votes.
