In 1991 Ram Vilas Paswan was elected from this constituency on a Janata Dal ticket. Perhaps it was a question of affinity for the surname, for in the past as well the Congress's Ram B Paswan had been elected from here twice. Taking this further, in 1996, the top three candidates had a common thread running through them: Pitambar Paswan of the JD, Upendra Paswan of the Samata Party and Ram Bhagat Paswan of the Congress.
