K V K Reddy won this seat twice earlier, in 1989 and 1991, capturing 53.3% and 52.1% of the vote respectively. In 1996, the NTR TDP nominee won 47,100 votes or 6.59% of the vote, which gave the combined TDP 51.37 % of the votem,, indicating a clear anti-Congress swing. Brahmananda Reddy, the Congress stalwart, represented this constituency in 1977 and 1980.
