Twice Urvashi-winning actress Sharda's appeal was enough to ensure victory for the TDP whose splinter, the NTR-TDP won 72,831 votes. The TDP has won this seat thrice, in 1984, 1991 and 1996. What was interesting was the margin of victory. In 1991, the TDP defeated the Congress by just 1.9%. In 1996, the margin was 5.88 %. Both the TDP factions won 55.93 % of the vote, indicating a clear swing against the Congress.
