Pentapati Pulla Rao (NTR-TDP) won 94,904 votes. Ramaiah, the winning TDP candidate, won the seat in 1984 and 1991; in 1989, he was no match for Telugu superstar Krishna (Congress). After losing the seat in 1991, the actor, it seems, has 'retired' from electoral politics. The margin of victory in 1996 -- 0.21 % -- was slimmer than 1991 when Ramaiah had a clear 7 % lead over Krishna.
