Mahanta escapes bid on life
Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta escaped a bid on his life last night when his security officers grabbed an activist of the Muslim United Liberation Front of Asom who tried to attack him in a remote village of Moirabari in Nagaon district.
Disclosing this at a press conference, Asom Gana Parishad publicity secretary Moidul Islam Bora said the MULFA activist, Shoras Ali, charged towards the chief minister brandishing a weapon.
He was overpowered by security officers and arrested.
In another breakthrough, the army shot dead Nalbari district Bodoland Liberation Tiger Force commander Open Basumatary and two others near Kumarikata in Nalbari district.
The army, acting on information received, attacked the BLTF men near the Indo-Bhutan border.
Meanwhile, additional companies of paramilitary forces were being rushed to Assam, state home secretary Alok Kumar said today. The companies, including Border Security Force personnel, were expected to reach Guwahati later today.
However, ''what is being sent is nowhere near our full requirement,'' he said. The home secretary refused to divulge the exact number of companies, citing security reasons.
Mahanta has been complaining about the Union home ministry and the Election Commission for the last two days on this issue.
Kumar said the BSF was bringing in ten additional companies from Nagaland to Assam, following the escalation of violence in the state in the last few days. These forces would be deployed in the Upper Assam district, he added.
The EC had rejected the state government's plea to hold elections in the state in two phases. The state government contended that it was not adequately equipped to deal with the growing menace of pre-poll violence.
