CPI-M patches up with DMK-TMC

Communist Party of India-Marxist Tamil Nadu unit secretary N Sankariah says his party had decided to contest only two seats and support the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham-Tamil Maanila Congress front in the rest of the 37 seats in the state.

The decision was taken as part of its fight against the 'communal' Bharatiya Janata Party and 'corrupt' All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham.

Sankariah said the party had withdrawn its candidates from Coimbatore, Nagercoil, Palani and Tiruchi to prevent a division of votes in favour of the BJP-AIADMK combine in these four constituencies.

The CPI-M was contesting from Madurai and Madras North as there was 'no chance' for the BJP to fare well in these two constituencies, he added.

Asked why the DMK-TMC front had rejected the party's claim to four seats, Sankariah said, ''Maybe because it did not want the Left parties to be represented in Parliament in significant numbers as they were against the entry of multinationals.''
