Gill suspends Sikkim CEO

In an unprecedented move, Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill has suspended Sikkim Chief Electoral Officer R S Shrestha for dereliction of duty.

State Chief Secretary K Sridhar Rao said the action was in response to Shrestha's going on leave at the peak of the election process. Shrestha, it would appear, had gone on leave since January 21, the day the election notification was issued, because 'his wife had been hospitalised'.

N D Chingapa, secretary to the governor, has taken over as the electoral officer from Saturday, January 31.
