Road blockade in Assam hurts Tripura, Mizoram

E-Mail this report to a friend

The road linking the two north-eastern states of Tripura and Mizoram with the rest of the country remained cut off for the fifth day today on account of the 1,001-hour road blockade agitation by Manipuri students on the Assam-Agartala National Highway in Cachar district of Assam.

The Manipuri people living in Assam started the agitation on December 1 to demand introduction of their mother tongue in primary education in the state.

The blockade has been organised at Kalain, Laxmipur, Gomra and Katigora in Cachar.

Agartala has requested the Assam government to ensure that the highway, the lifeline of landlocked Tripura and Mizoram, is reopened.
