Godse playwright files writ seeking formal ban order

Pradeep Dalvi, author of the controversial play Mi Nathuram Godse Boltoy (I am Nathuram Godse speaking) today filed an urgent writ petition in the Bombay high court against the failure of the state government to give formal "orders of prohibition" for the staging of the play.

The petition will come up for hearing on Monday.

Dalvi said the petition is essentially to seek clarification from the government for its inability to give written intimation regarding the status of the play and its subsequent showing. He said he had served a notice on the state government in this connection last month but received no response, hence he was compelled to file an urgent writ.

The petition also submits that in case the order of prohibition was not served on any one including the director, producer, writer or artists, it maybe presumed that there is no ban on the play and its staging will carry on.

The play met with a violent response in Bombay on July 17 following which the state government was advised by the Centre to ban its staging.

Meanwhile, the play's producer, Uday Dhurat, has also served notices on the state government and in case of inaction will take recourse to a writ petition for the recovery of the invested amount, Dalvi added.
