Karunanidhi urges PM to persuade Karnataka to accept Cauvery authority

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to prevail upon Karnataka to accept the Cauvery river water authority proposed in the Centre's draft scheme to implement the award of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal.

Karunanidhi's speech at the meeting of the chief ministers of the riparian states, convened by Vajpayee in New Delhi, was released to the press in Madras.

Opposing the Karnataka government's suggestions to the coordination commitee to only interpret and render advice for the implementation of the tribunal award, Karunanidhi said this was not in conformity with Section 6 (a) of the Inter State Water Disputes Act.

He pointed out that the Centre had not accepted Karnataka's suggestion at the ministerial-level conference on September 19 last year on the same ground.

Recalling that several rounds of talks held between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu bilaterally as well as in the presence of Union ministers, had failed, Karunanidhi said the tribunal itself had been constituted at the instance of the Supreme Court, and the tribunal's interim order was also notified on the intervention of the apex court.
