Congress fears government would buckle and sign CTBT

The Congress today apprehended that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government would sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's statement in Parliament yesterday indicated this possibility, Congress spokesperson Girija Vyas told the media in New Delhi.

The Congress was against signing the CTBT in the present form and the government should take Parliament into confidence before deviating from the well-laid policy on this issue, she said.

India should work for time-bound total nuclear disarmament and all the nuclear powers should be brought under such a disarmament programme, she said.
