Does opportunity knock twice? It did for software engineer Durba, when Remi kept pestering her to chat at the MSN India chat room.
It all began with a simple conversation, recalls Remi. "I remember her asking me how I looked and I disappointed her by saying I was plain-looking. I think she liked my cheeky sense of humour though, and we got talking. I sent her my pictures only after we decided to marry, and I was worried she would stop talking to me if she saw what I looked like."
It all happened slowly. Remi mentions how much he enjoyed their daily chats, and the fact that she was so intelligent. "At times she used words I had to look up in a thesaurus." Contrary to the rules online, trust came easily here. "When someone is just a nickname, pouring one's heart out is easy. There are subtle signals everywhere, if you know how to look for them," say both.
Proposing to her was a nerve-racking experience. Expecting a reply in the negative, her 'Yes' in the dialogue box left him speechless, and deliriously happy.
The Internet didn't always play Cupid though. The couple remember annoying interruptions like slow connections. "Getting a bright 'good morning' email daily made it all worthwhile though," smiles Durba.
Apart from trying to bridge the Bangalore-Calcutta gap, the couple are currently busy with wedding plans. And yes, both families and friends took it in stride, reacting to the love story without scepticism…"though my sister did think I was pulling a fast one on her…" adds Remi, with a smile.
