How Bollywood's superhero films fare at the box office

Ranbir Kapoor fans had been waiting for his Brahmastra to release later this year.

With Director Ayan Mukherjee announcing that the film's VFX would take a lot more time than expected, the wait may go on till Summer 2020.

Ranbir will join an elite group of actors who have featured in a superhero film over the years.

Brahmastra

Box office collection: (To be released)

Expected to be the biggest superhero film coming out of Bollywood.

Though there is no word whatsoever on what the plotline is, buzz is that it has contemporary times meeting mythological times.

The Karan Johar production also has Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Alia Bhatt and Mouni Roy in the cast.

 

Koi... Mil Gaya

Box office collection: Rs 48 crores

The only franchise which has stood the test of time and has been a true Bollywood superhero franchise.

Rakesh Roshan had a certain vision of how he wanted his superhero flick to be and the manner in which he incorporated emotions into the narrative, Indian audiences flocked theatres in hordes.

Krrish

Box office collection: Rs 69 crores

The father-son 'jodi' upped the ante in a big way when it came to putting together the franchise.

This was apparently not part of the plan, but since as a character Krrish had been much loved, it was just logical to establish him as a superhero.

The film was bigger in scale, size and grandeur and audiences gave a nod of approval as well.

Krrish was an even bigger hit.

 

Krrish 3

Box office collection: Rs 245 crores

This time around, the team hit the roof and all frontiers were crossed when Krrish 3 hit the screens.

Krrish 3 had the kind of set up that could actually compete with Hollywood at various junctures and the outcome was huge enough to make this one a blockbuster affair.

Krrish 4 is expected to go on the floors next year.

Robot (Hindi)

Box office collection: Rs 20 crores

A South import with Rajinikanth in superhero avatar.

One of those rare films where the character was a hero which turned villain.

The Hindi version didn't set the box office on fire, but during television re-runs, it has enjoyed recall value.

 

2.0 [Hindi]

Box office collection: Rs 190 crores

Such was the love which the superhero character Chitti enjoyed that the sequel was a much bigger affair.

The makers pitched this movie as the costliest ever Indian film and brought Akshay Kumar into the fold as a super villain.

It took a flying start at the BO and marched towards the Rs 200 crores mark, just falling short.

 

Ra. One

Box office collection: Rs 114 crores

Shah Rukh Khan had a dream when he put Ra. One into action.

On its release, it was the costliest Hindi film ever made and came with unprecedented hype.

That reflected in the bumper opening that the film took.

Audience word of mouth was mixed and though Shah Rukh Khan went all out as producer and actor, the end result was just about fine.

 

A Flying Jatt

Box office collection: Rs 40 crores

A new kind of superhero was conceived by Director Remo D'Souza for A Flying Jatt, with a 'desi Punjabi' touch to it.

The film didn't fare well commercially though it had had a good response on television where it emerged as a hit.

 

Drona

Box office collection: Rs 13 crores

A film which would have been perfect for countless memes had it released today.

Goldie Behl's experiment didn't work at all and the Abhishek Bachchan starrer turned out to be a disaster.

 

Mr India

Box office collection: Rs 10 crores

The most endearing superhero film to date.

Anil Kapoor is a common man who turns into a superhero of sorts after wearing a watch that makes him invisible.

Though it was released more than 30 years ago, Director Shekhar Kapur ensured his film had the film had technical finesse.
