There was a time Nirupa Roy and Sulochana played grandmothers in numerous films. Years later, we saw Farida Jalal and Reema Lagoo take over this character.

Quite a few actresses have, in fact, played the dadima in the movies, bringing in various shades and emotions.

Neena Gupta takes over in this week's release Sardar Ka Grandson, and plays a grandmother who is 97 years old!

She plays Arjun Kapoor's dadi and Kanwaljit Singh's mother, and wants to make one last visit to Lahore to see the home that she had built.

Joginder Tuteja looks at the various dadis of Bollywood.

Rekha, Super Nani

Rekha played a grandmother to Sharman Joshi in Super Nani.

As is expected from the diva, she turns from being a simple grandmother to a stunning beauty in this Indra Kumar directed film.

Rekha looked stunning as ever.

Kamlesh Gill, Vicky Donor

What Kamlesh Gill did in Vicky Donor has been copied in numerous films after its release.

Bollywood hadn't really seen a grandmother like her before. The kind of lady who likes to have a drink or two with her daughter-in-law (Dolly Ahluwalia) before she retires for bed, the actress was a hoot!

Director Shootjit Sircar made sure she stood out in this film starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Annu Kapoor.

Dolly Ahluwalia, Door Ke Darshan

Dolly Ahluwalia excelled as well, in a little known gem called Door Ke Darshan, which released earlier last year.

She wakes up after years of coma, but is still trapped in the 1980s and the 1990s.

She's delightful in this slice-of-life film where she takes the family to task.

Govinda, Hadh Kardi Aapne

Yes, Govinda features on this list as well!

In the riotous comedy Hadh Kardi Aapne, Govinda played as many as six characters, including a grandmother.

It was fun to see multiple Govindas sitting at the dining table and chatting with his various avatars of grandparents, uncle, mother and sister.

Hema Malini, Baghban

Hema Malini was a delight to watch in her last hit at the box office, Baghban.

As someone who was ill-treated by her four sons and their wives, the actress brought in just the right kind of pathos and sensitivity.

She also developed a bond with her granddaughter (played by Rimi Sen).

Waheeda Rehman, Delhi 6

Think Genda Phool and you remember Waheeda Rehman's graceful dance on the terrace.

As Abhishek Bachchan's grandmother, she had a good part in the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's directorial, which established a good bond between the duo.

Madhumalti Kapoor, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Madhumalti Kapoor made quite an impression in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety.

A relatively new actor, she played a Punjabi grandmother with a difference as she brought with her modern thoughts while being rooted to traditions.

She enjoyed a great bond with grandson Sunny Singh and there were some sweet scenes with Kartik Aaryan too.

Kamini Kaushal, Kabir Singh

'Suffering is very personal. Let him suffer.'

Kamini Kaushal's dialogue brought in depth to the narrative of Kabir Singh.

The veteran actress showed has been a part of the industry for decades, and she still formed a strong bond with the young generation of actors, including Shahid Kapoor.
