After earning unanimous acclaim from the critics and the public alike in her fictionalised portrayal of Southern siren Silk Smitha, Vidya Balan -- a frontrunner for the awards season this year -- unveiled the trailer of her next film, the Sujoy Ghosh directed Kahaani, at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai.

In the film, Vidya plays a pregnant woman, who returns from London in search of her missing husband. The film, set mostly in Bengal, looks provocative, and judging by the trailer, hints on being both plot-driven and performance-driven.

Dressed in the same costume as the one seen in the Kahaani poster, Vidya looked blissfully content and commented on the same of having had a ''fruitful year full of meaty roles.''

When asked about how the year had treated her personally (she reportedly spent the New Years holidaying in New Zealand with rumoured boyfriend, UTV CEO Siddharth Roy Kapoor), Vidya was evasive and diverted the topic abruptly to an earthquake that she was fortunate to have not been near, in the same country.

In an industry, where heroines are mostly utilised as props or tools for titillation, Vidya Balan is a hero.

Convention-defying right from her debut in Pradeep Sarkar's film Parineeta, she's sunken her teeth in films that are mainstream yet boastful of some gripping content. So what triggered her aspirations to be an actress? ''Madhuri Dixit's Ek..do .. Teen (in Tezaab). I haven't danced to any other song as much I have to that one. I was crazily in love with it, and would practise in front of the mirror constantly. It was then I knew I wanted to be in Bollywood,'' she shares with a smile.

So what is she expecting in 2012? ''Although it's important to make enough money, I am only doing roles that I really like and ignoring the ones that don't appeal to me.''
