The Biggest Disappointments in Malayalam cinema, 2013

Only about one in 10 Malayalam movies were decent ones, making it difficult to choose the five worst films of the year.

There were some big budget buffoonery as usual, but they made money at the box office and from satellite rights.

Here are the most sensational disappointments of 2013

Kalimannu

Director: Blessy

The heroine of the film, Swetha Menon, was bold enough to allow Blessy and his crew to shoot her real life pregnancy and delivery.

Had the film stuck to the theme of a mother and her newborn child, it would have been good.

But the film deteriorated into some kind of advertisement for an infertility hospital.

Moral of the story: If you have to sell a rubbish movie, just create some controversy.

Geethanjali

Director: Priyadarshan

Mohanlal playing his character from the hit Manichithrathazhu, along with Priyadarshan, made Geethanjali a high profile venture.

But what emerged was a film that mocked the viewer in every way.

In his usual style, Priyadarshan copied from an already made movie (Tamil film Charulatha, based on Thai movie Alone).

But this one lacked any merit.

Mohanlal’s Ladies & Gentleman and Lokpal were idiotic mishaps too.

Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal

Director: Lal Jose

Dileep had a spectacular year, raking in money from his brainless comedies Kammath & Kammath, Sound Thoma, Sringaravelan and Nadodi Mannan.

His attempts to try the modern style (popularly known as ‘new generation’) in his latest film Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal, directed by Lal Jose, nosedived.

We suggest: Stick to what you do best, Dileep.

Director: Ranjith

Mammootty, who has been surviving solely on the satellite rights of his films, tried to recreate the Pranchiyettan & the Saint trick with Ranjith in KKM.

They all went to Germany for a few days and churned out a boring film that added to the flop list of the superstar.

Among Mammootty’s various films, Immanuel had Fahadh Faasil, and Kammath & Kammath had Dileep, to save him.

Hotel California

Director: Aji John

Jayasurya and Anoop Menon teamed up on a regular basis after some initial hits.

With Hotel California, their style of crass comedy backfired big time.

Like Vinayan’s Dracula, this film too managed to rope in some porn hungry viewers.

If this film was supposed to showcase some out-of-the-box thinking, it failed miserably.
