UTV Motion Pictures is making its big entry into Malayalam films with Grandmaster. The film is being directed by B Unnikrishnan, with Mohanlal, Narain, Priyamani and Jagathy Sreekumar in the cast.

The audio release of Grandmaster was held recently in Kochi. The film's cast and crew were present on the occasion along with some of the top names from the Malayalam film industry.

The film is about a police officer who is lonely after his divorce. He loses interest in his job, but takes up a challenge at a certain point in his career.

Grandmaster will hit the screens on April 27.

An Ordinary first quarter for Malayalam films

The first quarter of the year has been something of a disappointment for Malayalam cinema. The big success is Ordinary, which has set the box-office on fire. Though the film has not really been liked by critics, viewers are queuing up in big numbers to watch it.

Second Show, which marked Mammootty's son Dulquer Salmaan's entry as an actor, has also been declared a success.

Ee Adutha Kaalathu, written by Murali Gopi and directed by Arunkumar Aravind, has made a good impression, though the movie is not considered a big hit.

Mayamohini, which is generating much interest because of Dileep playing a woman, has got a good opening, which should help rake in the moolah.

Malayalam film says good-bye to specialist comedians?

Malayalam cinema has always had a parallel comic track, with several actors specialising in the art. For the past few years, actors like Suraj Venjarammoodu, Salim Kumar and Harisree Asokan have been faithfully doing the honours, making viewers laugh at their antics intermittently through the film.

Recently, in what looks like a new trend, serious actors like Biju Menon and Baburaj have taken on the role of tickling our funny bone. Unlikely and rough-looking baddies such as Bheeman Raghu, Sphadikam George and Abu Salem are new entrants in the comedy segment.

New additions to the comedy circus are expected and everyone is wondering who they will be.

Kaniha on a high after the succes of Cobra

Kaniha, who is having a dream run in Malayalam films after her marriage and motherhood, plays one of the female leads in the just released Cobra.

Kaniha is pleased at how well she has been received by Malayali audiences. "Malayalis seems to have started considering me as one of their own and I am frequently invited to functions organised by Malayali groups in the US, where I am based now. Right now, I am all excited about my roles in the Mammootty starrer Cobra and also Spirit, which has Mohanlal as the hero," says Kaniha.
