Readers' Pick: Bollywood's Ten WORST Item Songs

Last updated on: March 5, 2013 14:59 IST
Kareena Kapoor in Dabangg 2

Item songs are a necessary evil in Bollywood.

Though criticised for objectifying women, even top filmmakers from Karan Johar to Dibakar Banerjee cannot resist adding a glitzy, glamorous item number in their movies to lure the masses.

Even the leading ladies seem to have no qualms about going all out with the amazingly toned bodies to ooze oomph in a showstopper song. They get tons of money and mileage out of it.

Often the item girl is more talked about than the film's actual heroine. Remember Aishwarya Rai's jhatkas in Kajrare in Bunty Aur Babli, Deepika Padukone's ditzy moves in Dum Maaro Dum? Thought as much.

But there's a thin line between sexy and smutty.

Here's when item songs went overboard to draw attention and ended up looking REALLY distasteful.

Take a look at 10 of the WORST Item Songs of Bollywood picked by our readers!

Fevicol, Dabangg 2

The woman looked red-hot doing a Chammak Challo in Ra.One. And even though the aggression of Heroine's Halkat Jawani was a tad loud, it was still acceptable.

But Kareena Kapoor Khan gyrating in a trashy lungi and choli to lip-sync, 'Main toh tandoori murgi hoon yaar. Gatka le saiyan alcohol se,' is a complete no-no.

Mehbooba, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag

Urmila Matondkar in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag

Everything about Ram Gopal Varma's remake of Sholay is a shoddy mess.

A skimpily clad Urmila Matondkar trying to recreate Helen's class act with Abhishek Bachchan in tow is no exception.

The camera seems more interested in her heaving cleavage while the heavily tanned/dark make-up lends Urmila a distinctly creepy look to pass off as erotic.

Aa re pritam pyare, Rowdy Rathore

Mumaith Khan in Rowdy Rathore

Rowdy Rathore is the A to Z of jarring.

And so else can one expect from starlet troika Mumaith Khan, Maryam Zakaria and Shakti Mohan in the track Aa re pritam pyaare?

The raunchy trio throttles their bodies vigorously to the over-the-top tunes of this song with a single-minded aim of appeasing their target audience -- the frontbenchers.

Tinku Jiya, Yamla Pagla Deewana

Madhuri Bhattacharya in Yamla Pagla Deewana

It's sad enough to see Hindi cinema's legend getting all lustful with a semi-clad pretty young thing (Madhuri Bhattacharya) in this tackily picturised ditty from Yamla Pagla Deewana.

It doesn't help just how terribly annoying the song is too.

Channo, Gali Gali Chor Hai

Veena Malik in Gali Gali Chor Hai

How to look obscene in a matter of minutes?

Doubt anyone would ever want to try it out.

But if ever such a ridiculous desire does arise, watch Pakistani actress and former Bigg Boss contestant Veena Malik turn on her wild, crude side in Channo.

Jalebi Bai, Double Dhamaal

Mallika Sherawat in Double Dhamaal
You may have ooh-aahed over her nimble moves in Guru's Maiyya Maiyya but Mallika Sherawat's bawdy shimmy, which is basically a show reel of her numerous curves, in and as Jalebi Bai is too icky to approve.

Aga Bai, Aiyyaa

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Rani Mukerji in Aiyyaa

Often a picture of grace and efficiency, Rani Mukerji sorely disappoints in her commitment to match the hyper tone of the super silly Aiyyaa.

From doling out orgasmic expressions to shaking her beefy belly like an unwell Shakira, Rani just miserably falters with Aga Bai.

Kunda khol, Chakravyuh

Last updated on: March 5, 2013 14:59 IST
Sameera Reddy in Chakravyuh

Sameera Reddy shakes her booty like her life depended on it to Chakravyuh's super lewd number, Kunda khol.

To think Prakash Jha's film is supposed to be a realistic exploration of Naxalite ideology and activities.

Dan dan cheeni, Department

Nathalia Kaur in Department

Department garnered a lot of flak for its giddy camerawork.

But it takes indecent to another level when it comes to capturing Nathalia Kaur's uninhibited dancing in Dan dan cheeni.

Truly dirty dancing, this.

Dekhta hai tu kya, Krazzy 4

Rakhi Sawant in Krazzy 4

Rakhi Sawant isn't a subtle one.

Tinsel town' most curious resident represents everything that's NOT elegant or sublime in her racy dance item number of this Rakesh Roshan production.
