Madhuri Dixit, Ranveer Singh and other stars performed at Samajwadi Party's annual extravaganza in party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's native village Safai in Uttar Pradesh.

After the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government's move to exempt Madhuri Dixit's comeback film Dedh Ishqiya from tax in the state, the veteran actress performed at the annual cultural extravaganza called Safai Mahotsava, held in Yadav's ancestral village Saifai in Uttar Pradesh, on January 8.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress slammed the Samajwadi Party government for holding the celebrations while the victims of the Muzaffarnagar riots reportedly suffer under adverse weather conditions at relief camps in the state.

The stars justified their participation by saying they were there for charity.

'As artists and celebrities, we believe in using our reach to help others through drawing attention to the needs of the day,' Madhuri tweeted. 'For UP, on behalf of the artists who performed at Safai, Being Human is donating Rs 25 lakhs to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.'
