Nagesh Kukunoor's forthcoming film Lakshmi is a hard-hitting movie based on human trafficking and the sex trade.

The film revolves around a 14-year-old-girl, who gets pushed into prostitution and fights back her tormentors.

Playback singer Monali Thakur plays the title role of Lakshmi.

Kukunoor was inspired to make Lakshmi based on his interactions with children, who were pushed into the sex trade. These children were being rehabilitated through an NGO that he supported.

During his interaction with these girls, he came across many harrowing cases. But the story about this teenager stood out and grabbed his attention. 

Lakshmi also stars Kukunoor, Shefali Shah, Ram Kapoor and Satish Kaushik. It will release in January.
