Review: Is Shanghai the year's best trailer?

Boom. The latest firework from Dibakar Banerjee's munition factories is coming our way soon, and the high-voltage, high-energy trailer immediately sets the tone and provokes interest.

An adaptation of Costa Gavras' Z, Banerjee's film clearly makes apparent the way the director likes to get his hands grimy, while throwing up familiar faces in wholly different light.

Bengali veteran Prasenjit can be seen as a firebrand activist, Kalki Koechlin sinks her teeth into the fingers of an assailant hanging on to her auto-rickshaw, Emraan Hashmi looks unashamedly sleazy and — for the first time — very real indeed, and Abhay Deol, as a round-faced Government babu with a smarmy moustache, looks alarmingly fit for the part. As a bonus we also glimpse the great Farooque Shaikh, perhaps finally getting a substantial role.

Murder attempts. Investigation. Enquiries. Conspiracies. And songs. Ending with an insanely catchy Bharat Mata Ki Jai song, the trailer sizzles all the way through.

Bring it on, DB. We can't wait to visit your Shanghai.
