Phil Collins has revealed that he is set to end his rock career as he is facing health problems that prevent him from playing the drums.

Collins, 60, who has been the drummer and vocalist for the band, has hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, all brought on by a lifetime spent hunched behind a drum kit.

'My doctors tell me it's a work in progress, that it will take about a year for me to recover,' the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

The singer, who has sold more than 150 million records, said he has been told his hands are not strong enough to play the drums.

'I don't think I'll ever be able to do that again,' he stated.

He also said that he feels it is 'a good time to stop' making music, and to concentrate more on his two sons, Nicholas and Matthew, with his third wife Orianne Cevey.

'I'm not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I'm more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,' he said, adding, 'I don't think anyone's going to miss me.'

His inspiring role as stuttering King George VI has already won him the Oscar for Best Actor and now Colin Firth is on his way to pick up a knighthood. The 50-year-old has been nominated for the Queen's birthday honours list.

Nominations have already closed and are now being considered by a committee led by the Cabinet Office and an announcement will be made in June, the Daily Mail reported quoting sources.

According to sources the actor is likely to become Sir Colin, thanks to his royal role. 'Colin has been a great ambassador for Britain throughout his career and his sensitive portrayal of King George VI has won him much admiration among the Royal Family and, of course, the film's many fans,' the source added.

The Queen has had a private screening of the movie, which also picked up four Oscars including Best Film and Best Director. It is believed that she was touched by Firth's portrayal of her late father.
