Ram Gopal Varma's rant against the Indian government

Hollywood director Woody Allen recently refused to release his film Blue Jasmine in Indian theatres, as he objected to mandatory anti-tobacco warnings before the film's screening.

Now it’s filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's turn to slam the government over anti-tobacco ads, which are forced into movie scenes.

‘I have been seeing a million anti smoking campaigns since i was a kid but yet to see a single smoker who gave up smoking becos of them. Nd why should non smokers who pay good money to see the likes of Hritiks and Katrinas suffer grotesque visuals of diseased lungs nd mouths,’ the 51-year-old filmmaker tweeted.

‘If the govts only intention is2 educate us moronic idiots on the dangers of smoking why stop only with smoking nd ignore other worse evils? I think when in a film some ppl play cards their shud be a mandatory super..'Gambling is bad'. When someone in the film drinks they shud put a super..'Drinking is unhealthy' nd shud show grotesque visuals of the liver in half screen. Whn someone kills some1 on screen they should order producer 2 freeze frame nd put a super 'Murder is a crime nd it carries death penalty'’ he added.

‘When someone is having an affair on screen the censors shud put a rule of of a super saying 'adultery will make u burn u in hell' Whn a couple is mkng love half the screen shud hav super 'practice safe sex' along wth close ups of gonorrhea nd syphillis infested genitals. Government logic is what they fail to teach us at educational institutions they force us to learn at the movies..Mera bharat mahaan..jai ho,’ he further added.

He didn’t stop there. ‘Some claim that cigaratte consumption is falling but Its bull that its becos of these ads at the theatres. Nd if they really believe that ads can stop ppl from having vices they shud logically do that fr all vices...why only cigaratte and gutka. They shud put a limit on features 2 b not mre thn an hour nd shud put 1 hour of ads inbtwn as breaks against crime alcohol prostitution etc,’ he signed off.
