Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari review

November 14, 2020 10:54 IST

Diljit Dosanjh and Manoj Bajpayee make this comedy-drama a decent watch with their fabulous performances, says Namrata Thakker.

When you bring on board two terrific actors who have successfully explored the comic genre, as an audience, you do expect the movie to be a laugh riot.

But that sadly IS not the case with Abhishek Sharma's Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari.

Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Manoj Bajpayee in the lead along with a brilliant supporting star-cast, Sharma's film is set in the 1990s and captures Mumbai beautifully.

The plot revolves around a wedding detective, Madhu Mangal Rane (Bajpayee), who does background checks of prospective grooms.

Suraj Dhillon (Diljit) owns a dairy business and is looking to settle down with a nice girl.

When Madhu ruins a good marriage proposal for Suraj, the latter is irked and decides to take revenge.

But he ends up falling in love with Madhu's sister Tulsi Rane (Fatima Sana Shaikh).

But will Madhu let them get married?

Story wise, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari doesn't offer anything extraordinarily new.

But the movie lacks the entertainment quotient and doesn't tickle your funny bone as often as you would like.

Since it is a situational comedy, the story has to flow effortlessly with comic punches every now and then so that you don't lose interest.

Unfortunately, that doesn't happen.

Yes, Diljit and Manoj make you laugh, but not consistently and that's the biggest disappointment.

Both actors are really good with their performances, but seem let down by the writing.

Diljit is fabulous with his comic timing especially when he tries to speak Marathi.

Manoj's character has hints of grey and pulls it off perfectly with a smirk throughout.

Fatima Sana Sheikh looks beautiful and lends good support.

The supporting cast of Supriya Pilgaonkar, Annu Kapoor, Seema Pahwa, Manoj Pahwa, Vijay Raaz and Neha Pendse are also good.

A shoutout to the actor who plays Diljit's best friend and a die-hard Amitabh Bachchan fan in the movie.

In fact, what makes Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari worth watching is its ensemble cast.

It's not often that you get to see a bunch of good actors coming together in a movie and so it's hard to believe that the makers wasted this opportunity by coming up with a story which never hits the high points.

But kudos to Diljit and Manoj for playing their parts earnestly and bringing much more to the table.

All in all, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is a decent affair because of the performances.

It's a delight to watch Diljit and Manoj together on screen.
