Shakthi Chidambaram wields the megaphone for the Tamil film Vyaabaari which also has director turned actor S J Surya in a dual role. The film has three leading ladies -- Tamanna, Namitha and Malavika. It is all about a wealthy businessman whose life takes a turn for the worse thanks to greed.
The film has music by Deva and lyrics by Vaali.
The hip hop number Vetriyai kicks off the film's album. The opening line of this concoction starts with mutilated miniscule syllables of the title Vyaabaari. Devan's singing is lacklustre and Anitha's voice is tiresome.
If you think this was bad wait till you get to the second track Kadi kadi Kadi kadi kosukadi by Mano and Anuradha Sriram. The song starts with an invocation to Lord Ganesha and ends suggestively. Both the singers are wasted here and it is a pity that Mano is back only to mouth such lines.
We have yet another suggestive track in Feel of Kosukadi. This song is full of lustful exchanges, moans and other suggestive sounds. Some swara frills are added in an attempt to give the piece a classical touch! Shameful, and to think that such lyrics are penned by veteran poet Vaali. What a letdown!
July maadathil could have been a fairly good song but for S J Surya's harsh rap-like 'interruptions' in between. Lyrics are full of sexual overtones, especially towards the end. However, Kalyani's rendering gives the track a melodious feel.
Up next is Aasaipatta rendered by Hariharan and Vaishali. It is more like a ballad eulogizing motherhood and the unselfish care with which the mother brings up her offspring. Percussion and instrumentation with violin delineations are soothing. This is perhaps the only number in the album which has flawless rhythm.
The concluding Tha tha Namitha by Arjith and Reshmi is a gana number with folksy tune and loaded with sexual overtones. Deva uses revamped tunes for the nadaswaram interludes.
The verdict? Vyaabaari is representative of the rot that has infected Tamil film lyrics. Avoid.
