Dhanush and music composer Anirudh Ravichander come together for the third time for Maari. They had previously collaborated on 3 (which had the super successful song Kolaveri D) and Velai Illa Pattadhari

As expected, the magic continues.

Dhanush has penned three songs in the album. Two songs are by Rokesh of Dangamaari and Theirikuthu Masss fame and Vignesh Shivan of Adhaaru Adhaaru fame.

Maari is director Balaji Mohan’s third film, after the critically acclaimed Kadhalil Sodhapavudhu Eppadi and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum. It is produced by Raadhika Sarathkumar and Listin Stephen.

The album starts with the groovy number Maari Thara Local (meaning Maari is ultra local). Dhanush lends his voice, along with Anirudh.

The song has all the ingredients of a kuthu song. The fast-paced beats coincide with the rhyming lyrics, with the ‘Maari’ word hooked throughout the song.

This is followed by a retro number, Oru Vidha Aasai, sung by Vineeth Srinivasan. It is a lot livelier, with a rock-n-roll styled execution. The arrangement by Anirudh is excellent.

A groovy love duet Don’u Don’u Don’u is more characteristic of Anirudh’s composing style. Sung by Anirudh and Alisha Thomas, this song has some techno beats, and leaves you hooked right from the start. The contrast between Anirudh’s coarse voice and Alisha Thomas’s glossy vocals produces a very hummable number.

Bagulu Odayum Dagulu Maari starts on an orchestral note before going down the kuthu road. A short song, it is sung by Dhanush.

Maari Swag, heard in the teaser, is an extract of the Maari Thara Local and builds up to the hero’s entry.

Thappa Dhaan Theriyum is yet another crazy kuthu song but made appealing by Vignesh Shivan with nonsensical Tanglish lyrics. The naadaswaram part reminds you of Kolaveri D. Dhanush dominates the vocals, ably supported by Chinna Ponnu and Magizhini Manimaaran.

The album will appeal to Gen Y.
