Truly, the Telugu movie Don should have been named Class! Raghava Lawrence who began his career as a director with the impetus provided by Nagarjuna, first made Mass which was a big hit. Nag was projected as a mass hero in that film. This time round he showcases Nag in a classy frame.
As the title suggests, the film is all about Don -- a good and bad one. Though one expected cliches, Lawrence has steered clear of all that.
Which brings us to the two best aspects of the film -- Nagarjuna as Don and Kelly Dorji as villain.
Everything about Nagarjuna -- his acting, mannerisms, wardrobe -- is simply superb. Not to be outdone is Kelly, who is the perfect foil for Nag (Nagarjuna). He is a welcome departure from the regular loud-mouthed villains.
The story goes like this: Suri is a goldenhearted Don and people, including the majority of politicians and industrialists, are happy with him. Trouble comes in the form of a bad Don, Stephen who wants to take over the country. He does this one state at a time with the latest being Andhra Pradesh. His modus operandi is to buy over the chota dons in their respective States. But Suri refuses to give in which leads to an intense battle between the two. How Suri takes on Stephen makes the rest of the film.
Lawrence appears to be growing well with each film. He knows his strengths and makes good use of them. His forte is entertainment and that is what he tries to present to the audience. The credit should go to Nag for believing in Lawrence and proving that their Mass was no flash in the pan.
Surprisingly there are no comedians. The only comic track is provided by Lawrence himself. For that matter there are no regular faces save for a few like Chalapati Rao. Anushka has nothing much to do except look stunning, especially in saris.
Music and choreography too are up to the mark. It is heartening to see the physically challenged youth participating in a dance number.
The dialogues are sharp, though there are times that Nag keeps mouthing the Telugu gadda and pride quite too often.
That said, Don is a perfect entertainer.
