Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, the fifth installment of age-defyingly good looking Tom Cruise's spy thriller series releases in Indian theatres August 7.

Known for its daredevil stunts that lead star Cruise performs himself, the franchise has rose to global success ever since the first installment was released in 1996.

Mission: Impossible

 

The first MI film was directed by Brian de Palma (who also directed the iconic Al Pacino starrer Scarface) and produced by Cruise.

Made on a budget of $80 million, almost half of the fifth installment's production costs at $150 million, the film opened with a record breaking  $11.8 million collections.

It also went on to make $75 million in its first six days, beating the record of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park.

 

Mission: Impossible II

 

The film's 2000 sequel was directed by John Woo, who is known for his breakthrough work in the action genre.

While the film did well in theatres, it was received with mixed responses from critics, who opined that the film was low on substance.


Mission: Impossible III

 

MI 3 marked the directorial debut of JJ Abrams, who is now helming the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the first film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

The film was released in a record 4,054 theatres across the US and received positive reviews.

 

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol

 

Mission Impossible 4 marked the franchise's first India premiere that was attended by the who's who of Bollywood, presumably because it also starred Anil Kapoor in a brief role.

The film was directed by Brad Bird, co-produced by JJ Abrams and starred Jeremy Renner, Tom Wilkinson, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton in significant roles.
