Last updated on: March 24, 2011 11:06 IST

MammoottyWay back in 1988, Malayalam director Siby Malayil made a film called August 1, which was loosely based on the 1973 Hollywood film, The Day Of The Jackal.

The film narrated the story of a police officer who saves the chief minister from the hands of a dreaded professional killer.

Mammootty played the role of police officer Perumal, while Sukumaran was the chief minister and Captain Raju played the killer.

Twenty three years later, writer S N Swami has now written a sequel to the first part, titled August 15.

In August 15, police officer Perumal will come to the rescue of the chief minister come again. Mammootty will play the protagonist while Nedumudi Venu will play the chief minister.

The movie has been directed by Shaji Kailas and produced by M Mani, under the banner of Sunitha Productions. The cinematographer of the movie is Pradeep Nair.

Meghna Raj plays the female lead. Sai Kumar, Siddique, Lalu Alex, Thalaivasal Vijay, Jagathy Sreekumar and Swetha Menon form the rest of the cast.

The grapevine has it that Mammootty and Shaji Kailas decided to do the film to bail out M Mani, the producer of their earlier film, Drona 2010, which bombed at the box office.

Hope the new venture is going to have a good run at the cash windows when it releases this week.
