Television saw quite a few great reality shows as well as soaps in 2012. There were quite a few soaps that explored new subjects, giving them an interesting spin.

Here's taking a look at the top 12 list. This list does not include evergreen shows like Saath Nibhana Saathiya, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Sasural Simar Ka and CID.

Satyamev Jayate

Aamir Khan made an impressive TV debut with Satyamev Jayate.

The show highlighted social issues such as honour killings, dowry and child abuse.

The show was simultaneously telecast on Doordarshan and the broadcaster's Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu channels.

It attracted large audiences and became a prominent topic of discussion on social networking sites and drawing rooms across the country.

Devon Ke Dev Mahadev

Mohit Raina and Mouni Roy in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev

Devon Ke Dev Mahadev tells the story of Lord Shiva (Mohit Raina) and his love for Sati (Mouni Roy) and later Parvati (Sonarika Bhadoria).

The show has a different style of narration. The mythological saga has been successfully delivering promising numbers since day one.

The show made the gods and the channel Life OK very happy in 2012.

Balika Vadhu

The serial highlights the issue of child marriage but in recent episodes it also talked about widow remarriage.

The protagonist Anandi (played by Pratyusha Banerjee) gets married in a mass wedding ceremony that also included many other widows of the village tying the knot on the same day.

Diya Aur Bati Hum

In Diya Aur Baati Hum, destiny binds Suraj (Anas Rashid), a simpleton who has not studied much, with Sandhya (Deepika Singh), an educated girl who aspires to study further and become an IAS officer.

Their bonding, and the manner in which the husband strives hard to fulfil his wife's dreams, have made an impact on viewers for its unusual viewpoint.

After ruling the TRP charts for more than a year, it recently began losing numbers. The makers of the show have decided to heat things up, to get back its TRP rating.

Madhubala

Set against the backdrop of the Indian film industry, the show brought together two of the most popular faces in the television industry -- RK (Vivian Dsena) and Madhu (Drashti Dhami).

It provided viewers a glimpse of the life of Bollywood stars, showing their struggles and challenges.

With Madhu and RK falling in love, the show is only expected to further cement its place in people's hearts.

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain

Their lip-lock and intimate moments in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain stunned audiences and created over-night hysteria. The 17-minute long lovemaking scene soon went viral on the web.

TV shows with time leaps do not go down well with audiences but the adorable Pihu (Amrita Mukherjee) made a significant contribution to the show's.
