Nithya Menen

Very few Kannada films hire local talent as leading ladies in their films.

Though some of them such as Meghana Raj, Radhika Pandit and Radhika Kumaraswamy did have a film each this year, the ones that stole the show were multilingual actresses, Nithya Menon, Bhavana and debutantes Swetha Srivastav and Sruthi Hariharan.

A look at the top actress of Kannada films in 2013.

Nithya Menen

Film: Myna

Multi-lingual actress Nithya Menon has won laurels for her spontaneous performances in various films.

Film: Ee Bhoomi Aa Bhanu

Ee Bhoomi Aa Bhanu suffered from a weak script. But Tamil actress Saranya Mohan, who made her Kannada debut with this film, delivered a brilliant performance.

She added grace to her role as Bhumi, a wife trying to make her crumbling marriage work.

The dubbing for her character lifted her performance higher.

Film: Lucia

For a newcomer to play two characters in a film is rare.

Sruthi Hariharan made an impressive debut with a nuanced performance as both the upcoming actress and also as an ambitious girl from a lower middle class family.

The film had a tight, innovative script with a fresh story line, both of which were challenging even for an experienced actor.

Bhavana Menon

Though pitted against two other leading ladies, Parul Yadav and Tulip Joshi, and with less screen time, she delivered the best performance in Bachchan.
