The most interesting aspect about Tamil cinema 2012 is that it was not the hyped and celebrated film-makers who made the most beautiful films, but the little known or hitherto unknown film-makers.

Here is our choice of the top five directors who made their mark in 2012.

Balaji Sakthivel tops the list for making the powerful and impressive Vazhakku Enn 18/9. The screenplay was unique and written by him, and the treatment was very sensitive.
