The most interesting aspect about Tamil cinema 2012 is that it was not the hyped and celebrated film-makers who made the most beautiful films, but the little known or hitherto unknown film-makers.

Here is our choice of the top five directors who made their mark in 2012.

Director: Balaji Saktivel

Film: Vazhakku Enn 18/9

Balaji Sakthivel tops the list for making the powerful and impressive Vazhakku Enn 18/9. The screenplay was unique and written by him, and the treatment was very sensitive.

 

Karthik Subbaraj

Film: Pizza

Karthik Subbaraj is the find of 2012. The story of Pizza, a day in the life of a pizza boy connected with a mystery, was unique and interestingly told.

Pandiraj

Film: Marina

As we have said before, Pandiraj is an immensely talented director who makes sensitive and path-breaking films.

After the national award winning Pasanga, Marina also breaks new ground.  

Balaji Mohan

Film: Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi

Balaji Mohan is a very young film maker and the story he tells in his first feature film also is young.

Audiences could relate to this well made film.

Prabhu Solomon

Film: Kumki

Prabhu Solomon had directed films before Mynaa. But it was after Mynaa that he was hailed as an important film maker in Tamil.

By making Kumki a better film than Mynaa, he has cemented his place in the list of film-makers who dare to experiment.
