It's your friendly green smelly ogre -- Shrek!

DreamWorks SKG's Shrek 2 premiered amidst huge fanfare at the Le Palais de Festival during the 57th Cannes International Film.

The sequel to the fourth highest-grossing computer animated Oscar-winning flick is expected to do great business at the box office.

Although Variety magazine may not think highly of the new Shrek film, the response at Cannes was to be seen to be believed.

A report in The Daily Telegraph mentions that the stars behind the voice of Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey -- Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy respectively -- received a hefty sum of $ 9.6 million approximately.

Shrek 2 offers some new voices as well. There is Antonio Banderas (Puss-in-Boots), Rupert Everett (Prince Charming), Julie Andrews (Fiona's mom), John Cleese (Fiona's father) and Jennifer Saunders (Fairy godmother).

If the buzz at Cannes is anything to go by, Shrek 2 is a hot contender for the prestigious Palme d'or award. The film releases in the United States on May 19.

There are more Shrek movies in the making. With Shrek a certified hit and Shrek 2, a hit in all probability, the makers are keen on churning a Shrek 3 and 4 after a gap of two years each.

The Daily Telegraph quotes executive producer Jeffrey Katzenerg as saying, 'Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions. Finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp where we meet him in the first movie. There is a reason he came to be there, but there is another chapter to the story before that'.

Why such a long gap you may wonder? Like Shrek says, 'I like my privacy'.
