Prithvi theatre fest begins on Saturday

Mumbai is getting ready for a feast of contemporary and traditional art as scores of theatre performers, writers and artistes get together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Prithvi Theatre, a pioneering theatre establishment in the metropolis.

During the 12-day Prithvi theatre festival starting on Saturday, around 20 plays, drawn from various parts of India, showcasing a montage of human emotions, struggles, victory, dilemmas and gripping realities of life, would take centrestage.

The festival, dedicated to eminent theatre personalities Prithviraj Kapoor and Geoffrey Kendall, will attempt to present the best of theatre from both rural and urban India, incorporating some of the best artistes in India.

It will host a variety of fare ranging from a one-man show Ek Qatra Khoon to the classic Vashtraharan and A Deeper Fried Jam, which is based within a discotheque. This year's cultural fare also includes Brhannala, a play drawing on an episode in the Mahabharata where Arjuna spends the last year of exile in the guise of woman.

Master Phoolmani (Gujarati)
Sir Sir Sarla (Hindi)
Harvalele Pratibimba (Marathi)
Vastaraharan, a milestone in Marathi theatre
Nupi (Manipuri)
Varugalamo (Tamil)
Raja Harishchandra (Rajashtani)
Karhyayani:- in the ancient form of Sanskrit theatre
Voh Bol Uthi, in the street theatre format, is a collage of three stories of women
