Advani started his career as a scriptwriter for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. He went on to direct Sunday -- produced by Children's Film Society, India, and starring Ratna Pathak-Shah -- which bagged two National Awards.

His last directorial venture Sankat City, starring Kay Kay Menon, Rimi Sen and Anupam Kher, released last year.

The filmmaker was a close associate of Kundan Shah and Aziz Mirza, and was an FTII graduate, batch of 1987.
