A still from ApothecaryMelvilasam director Madhav Ramadasan’s film Apothecary hits the screens today, August 7.

The story is set in a hospital named Apothecary. The director says the film touches on some social issues.

“I would like to view this as a devotional film in a stylised way. The devotion is not about religion, but about the noble profession of doctors. For those who are suffering from illness, a doctor has the stature of a God,” says Ramadasan, who won the Gollappudi Srinivas National Award for the best debutant director, for Melvilasam.

Suresh Gopi plays Dr Vijay Nambiar, a senior surgeon, and Abhirami is his wife, Dr Nalini. The couple works together in the same hospital. Jayasurya and Asif Ali play the roles of their patients.

“We are tackling some genuine issues here. The film raises some important social issues,” says Suresh Gopi.

Jayasurya says he has made an effort to lose weight and look like an ailing patient. “The script was so interesting that it prompted me to do so,” he adds.

Apothecary is produced by Dr Baby Mathew and Dr George Mathew under the banner of Arambankudiyil Cinemas. Hari Nair handles the camera.
