Veteran actress Sudha Shivpuri, who rose to prominence in 2000s as Baa on Ekta Kapoor-produced hit TV serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, passed away this morning in Mumbai.
She was 77.
According to reports, Shivpuri, who had been unwell for quite some time now, had suffered a stroke in 2013 and was briefly admitted to the ICU in a Mumbai hospital.
Shivpuri, who was married to the late character actor Om Shivpuri since 1968, started out in theatre when the couple founded a theatre group called Dishanter in New Delhi.
Together they staged several important plays including Aadhe Adhurey, Tughlaq, and Vijay Tendulkar's Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai.
The couple moved to Mumbai in the 1970s following which Shivpuri appeared in many Hindi films including Basu Chatterjee's Swami in 1977, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Hamari Bahu Alka and Sawan Ko Aane Do among others.
She is survived by actress daughter Ritu Shivpuri and son Vineet.
