'I love item songs; they make me look good,' Kareena Kapoor Khan tells Subhash K Jha.

Top actress and star wife Kareena Kapoor Khan has all the reasons to be content with her personal and professional life.

There's one thing she'd like to change about her career graph though.

Having starred in money-spinners like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Bebo now wants to take up more author-backed roles.

Her next two films -- Abhishek Choubey’s Udta Punjabi and R Balki’s untitled project -- are a part of her plan to go beyond mainstream fare.

On her 35th birthday on September 21, Kareena takes stock of her career and where she wants to veer it next with Subhash K Jha.

Are you happy with your journey in Bollywood so far?

I don’t look back. And I never analyse.

I do what I feel is right at any given time. It has been an exhilarating 15-year journey. I’ve worked in great films and bad films.

I am possessive about even my unsuccessful films like DevChameli was not a blockbuster either but it’s a milestone in my career.

Destiny had several blockbusters in my journey and I am grateful for that.

What's next?

Now I’m ready for a different kind of experience in my career.

Of course I love Salman’s kind of cinema. But it’s time for me to digress for some time. I’ll be doing two offbeat roles now --  Abhishek Choubey and R Balki will take me to an entirely different zone.

Shouldn’t you have taken the decision to do unorthodox films long back?

I went through a lot of changes in my life after I got married. My priorities changed. I began looking at life a lot differently. The best advice I got from my entire family -- my parents, sister and husband -- was to do whatever I wanted to with my career.

If I wanted to take it easy, if I didn’t want to give a 100 days to a film, so be it.

You didn’t mind losing something like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela?

I was under no pressure. At that point of time, I wanted to do mainstream films which didn’t require too much time so I could concentrate on my marriage and on building our new home.

That’s why I did Bajrangi Bhaijaan which didn’t require that much of my time.

Do you consult Saif before making career decisions?

Yes. Saif said I must do Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I'm happy I did the film.

After Chameli, director Sudhir Mishra was very keen to do another film with you?

Yeah. But at that point of time, I was happy just doing one offbeat Chameli and then going back to commercial films.

Now I am ready to give more time to exploring the actor in me. I have nothing to prove anymore.

Why do you do so many item songs for friends?

Why not? Mera dil bahot bada hai (I have a big heart). I love my item songs; they make me look good.

You don’t have to do item songs to look good. You are beautiful even without them.

I agree. I want to be a stunner till I am 80.

Aren’t you bored of being branded beautiful?

No woman ever gets tired of being called beautiful. But I know there’s a lot more to me than being beautiful.

So at this point of time, do you see yourself as an actress or a wife?

I am a happy home-maker and a star-actress.

What is the one role you can’t see yourself in?

I can't see myself doing an action film. I can’t see myself doing kickass roles. Even if George Lucas offers it to me, I can’t see myself flying in the air.

Flying, jumping, somersaulting mere se nahin hota (I cannot do it). I don’t like doing action roles. I am happy being known for Jab We Met.
