'He was no buffoon, he had depth'

Kamini Kaushal worked with the late Mehmood in a couple of movies. The actress pays a tribute to the comic star who died on July 23.

I will always remember him as a vibrant actor, full of life and energy. I worked with him in quite a few films. Our first one together was Meri Bhabhi (starring Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rehman). Mehmood played a comic character.

The film was tragic, and had come out very well. Mehmood's track was added later. When the film was ready, his contribution was so dynamic. The entire graph of the film had changed. It wasn't sad any longer. The comedy he played was so intense that the film lost out on the emotional content. It didn't make such a big impact as it did earlier.

I was so surprised and asked, "What happened?" He looked very sheepish and said, "I am the cause of this!"

His acting had taken away the emotionalism of the film. He had done such a fine job. This was one of his earlier films.

We have also done Godaan together. It was great working in that film too. He had a negative profile there and had even played a bit like a fool.

He was very human and sensitive. You would think he would be a buffoon, but he wasn't. He had depth which you could see in his films too.
