Emmy 2016: Aziz Ansari wins his first, Games of Thrones wins big

 The 68th annual Emmy Awards were held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on September 18.

A look at the big winners of the night.

Aziz Ansari

After creating history for becoming the first Indian-American actor to land a Emmy nomination in a lead actor category for his series Master of None, Aziz Ansari picked up his first Emmy award on September 18.

He won the trophy for Outstanding Writing for comedy series Master of None along the show's co-creator Alan Yang. The duo co-wrote the episode Parents.

Game of Thrones team

HBO series Game of Thrones, the fantasy saga based on George RR Martin's novels, made Emmy history, pushing its lifetime total number of awards to 38. It received the Best Drama award for the second consecutive year.

The People v OJ Simpson also triumphed at Emmys, winning five awards including Best Limited Series. A dramatic retelling of the infamous O J Simpson's murder trial, the show was honoured for its writing and bagged several acting awards as well.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Veep was declared the Best Comedy series and its star Julia Louis-Dreyfus won a record-breaking fifth Emmy in the Best Comedy Actress category.

 

Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light and Jill Soloway

Jeffrey Tambor won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for Transparent whereas Jill Soloway won for directing the the show.

Courtney B Vance

Courtney B Vance won the Best Actor award in a limited series or movie while Sarah Paulson won the Best Actress award.

The Best Supporting actor award went to Sterling K Brown for playing Christopher Darden in The People v OJ Simpson.

Regina

Regina King swept away the award for Best Supporting Actress in a limited series or movie for American Crime.

The talented actress had won in the same category last year as well.

David Benioff, DB Weiss

Besides Best Drama, GOT won David Benioff and DB Weiss the Best Writing in a drama series honour; Miguel Sapochnik won the Best Directing award for the show.

Last weekend, Games of Thrones became the most-honoured drama series after it picked up nine Emmys at the Creative Arts ceremony. 

Overall, the fantasy series has won 12 Emmy awards this year, out of 23 total nominations.

Rami Malek

However, the series lost in the drama acting category as Rami Malek of Mr Robot and Orphan Black actress Tatiana Maslany were named Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.
