Her performance in the forthcoming Praan Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye is drawing high praise. Her love scene in the film has made waves from the Censor Board to actress Tabu who admitted she couldn't do the role even if she tried. Divya Dutta

Divya Dutta is thrilled. "That was very sweet of Tabu. People keep talking about that love scene. Once they see the content and context, all tongues will stop wagging. To be honest, when Mahesh Manjrekar told me about the scene, I was sceptical. I had never done anything of this sort before. But his narration made me feel I wouldn't be uncomfortable. He was present during the shooting to make sure the scene went well. It came out perfect. There is no nudity or titillation, but the scene looks authentic," she says.

Divya has a clutch of films on hand starting with Aditya Bhattacharya's comedy Dubai Returned. "It is about three Dubai-returned guys played by Irfan Khan, Razaq Khan and Vijay Mourya," she says, adding, "I have an interesting role of a domineering woman. Aditya is superb at comedy. Since we are doing the film in sync sound, everyone has to keep controlling his or her laughter on the sets. The film's humour is very subtle."

In Indian Talkies, Divya plays a pretentious foreign-returned girl. "The situation is very comical. My costar is the fine actor Vijay Raaz. My director is Viju Vishwanath, who earlier made a film called Déjà vu."

But Divya's most prestigious assignment is Shyam Benegal's biopic on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. "I play Netaji's 17-year-old niece Ila. I guess I can pass off as a teenager. I met Shyambabu for a role. Since there were hardly any women's roles in the film, I wasn't very hopeful. When I was called I was ecstatic."

Divya's Shobha Yatra, she says, "is based on a play about a group of actors who play historical characters. It is directed by Vijay Ghatge."

She also stars in B R Chopra's Baghbaan, where she plays "the great Amitabh Bachchan's daughter-in-law. It is a good, meaty, slightly grey role. To my luck, all my scenes are with Amitabh Bachchan. Baghbaan is a totally commercial film. I am also doing Agnipankh about air force pilots. Directed by Sunil Puri, I play the wife of an air force pilot who disappears.

"These are small films. But size is of no consequence for me."
