Your Views:The best performances on the Hindi screen this year were both from the same movie. Ram Gopal Varma's "Company" displayed the immense talents of both Ajay Devgan and Mohanlal. Frankly, I'm surprised Deepa Gahlot did not mention Mohanlal's portrayal of Commisioner Srinivasan. It should also be noted that while Devgan did play a kind of derived gangster character, his role in "Deewangee" (which was mentioned by Ms. Gahlot as one of his best performances) was a carbon copy of Edward Norton in "Primal Fear." Were I to choose between his performances in "Deewangee" and "Company" I would pick "Company" any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Devgan as the gangster Malik brought a subtle, quiet ferocity to his role while Mohanlal offered uncommon, dignified intelligence as a police officer- a role that has so often been abused by "Bollywood" actors. Special mention should also be made to the young newcomer Vivek Oberoi as well as the awesome character actor Vijay Raaz, who was tremendous in "Company" and the otherwise average "Lal Salaam". Certainly the most vastly overrated (not to mention one of the worst)actors of the year was, as Gahlot so incisively mentioned, Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas in Bhansali's disastrous vision. But quite possibly the worst performance I have seen this year came from Arjun Rampal in Aankhen (or Dil Hai Tumhara, take your pick with this guy). An actor does not get as wooden or soulless as this gentleman has time and again proven he can be.

Agreed that the performance was a bit over the top as with anybody else in the movie, he certainly broke a mould in his career. A look back at Dilip Kumar's performances without Nostalgic prejudices just ampliflies my point that Shahrukh Khan has essayed the role better than anyone previously has.
